Daily Observances & Holidays
October 1 – National Hair Day
Newsetter Ideas: Share images of slick, cool, silly, or otherwise notable hairstyles you’ve worn before. Old school pictures always hit, especially if they’re from the 80s (because what were we DOING). Talk about your hair journey and what your hair means to you, whether you connect it deeply to your personality or don’t care about it in the slightest. Discuss your characters in the same terms. Have you ever done research into hair routines or textures that are not your own? And how do you determine the hair color and style of your characters? If your popular character had to get a different cut or dye, what would they do? Consider talking about your hair texture and what you do for a routine, including any special tips. If you could have any non-natural color in the world in an instant, which would you turn your hair to? How long has your hair ever gotten, or how short have you ever cut it? What are you and your characters’ favorite hair accessories? Show off your favorite clips, scrunchies, and tiaras. Show off your favorite wigs and give wig-wearing and lace front tips. Show off your freshly pressed, curled, styled, or cut hair.
IMPORTANT: Please remember that hair, especially in Black and Indigenous communities, is a really big deal, and you should never disparage, mock, or otherwise criticize what people (any people) choose to do with their hair, how much of it they choose to cover or not, or whether they wear wigs. Hair is a deeply personal journey and no two journeys are alike. Be mindful of the styles you poke fun at – including baldness! Sometimes, hair is not even a decision people get to make at all.
